Background Screenings

Registered Agents
Entities are required to maintain a registered agent in every state in which they obtain a certificate of authority. A registered agent is responsible for receiving important legal and tax documents including notice of litigation (service of process), franchise tax forms and annual report forms.
A certificate of authority is obtained at the Secretary of State and qualifies you to do business in that state. It is also a prerequisite to obtaining a license.
Resident Managers
6 different states ( Colorado, New Mexico, Hawaii, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Wyoming ) require collection agency licensees to have a physical location in the state where debtors can come to pay in person.
If your agency is located outside of these states, you will have to find a local office to represent you there. As part of the application process, each of these states will require that you list the resident manager that will represent you.
